We are currently using an investigative approach to maths and science. The task is for maths we are designing our own playground. The task description is: Your school has recently received extra funding for a new playground. The administration has decided to take suggestions from students on the design of the playground. It has been decided that this playground is to have the theme of space travel through the solar system. As a central feature you will need to design and create a model sundial for the school as a connection to the past. All the playground equipment must have geometric properties. Your task is to design a playground that will fit in the area of your school that your teacher indicates. You must include a map of your playground which shows a variety of geometric shapes such as quadrilaterals and triangles. This must include the mapping conventions that you have learned about. You will need to collect data about how shadows move, and use this to inform students how to use the sundial.
For Science we are looking at the earth's climatic disasters. the task despription for this is: You are a detective based on Space Station XY349 stationed somewhere in outer space. The year is 2025. You have received an urgent assignment from the Inter-planetary Task force. The Earth and its neighbouring planets are experiencing some unusual atmospheric events. Changes in day light, tidal changes, frequent sun bursts, droughts and floods, tornadoes and hurricanes, climatic changes and frequent sightings of comets and asteroids. Your task is to investigate why these occur normally and what can we expect will happen to our way of life should these changes continue. Finally are there any differences in the other planets’ atmosphere.
The children are really enjoying these sessions. It is nothing at all for the children to complain about a maths session finishing after 2 hours.
Next term we will be continuing our investigations. In maths our topic will be "World Heritage." We will be examining world usage maps and the affects of population changes. This unit sounds like SOSE but actually focuses on Measurement, maps and plans, and number work such as division of whole numbers, decimal and common fractions, addition and subtraction of decimal numbers.
We will also have a SOSE unit called "Our Past and Our Future." This unit will focus on the impact that introduced species have had on the Australian environment and the action we need to take to protect future environment..
